New site, new design, new purpose

July 31st, 2011 by Ivo

I started blogging back in 2005. Blogging was the method of choice to get your message across and to let people know what you were up to. But the past 2 years, things have changed. The growth of social media such as Twitter and Facebook have created new and more efficient ways to communicate. Many blogs, including mine, have become neglected. I've written just a single post in the last year, when I had something to say that didn't fit in a tweet. I lately asked myself; should I pick up blogging? Should I start writing more content? I've seen other people do this and fail: after a short revival they would simply stop writing again. So I figured that reviving the blog would be the wrong approach. Instead I realized I had to change the site, put less emphasis on the blog and embrace the fact that social media IS more efficient for day to day communication. The purpose of the blog is to provide background or opinions that don't fit social media. The purpose of the site as a whole should be to explain to people who I am, and guide them to the social media outlets where most of my communication takes place.

So I changed the site to make more room for social media, so the new site acts more like an aggregator of my tweets, flickr pictures, slideshare presentations and links to my social media accounts. I also had a new design made to reflect the new emphasis.

Of course the blog is still there, so old content doesn't get lost, but it's no longer the primary purpose of my site. I'll blog again when it makes sense, but where RSS feed subscriptions were once the preferred way of keeping track of a blog, that has moved to social media too (the RSS feed is still there though for those who still want to subscribe). Follow me on Twitter if you want to stay up to date with what I'm doing.

I do still value blogs for howto's, tutorials, opinion pieces etc; but since for me this is mostly an overlap with my Egeniq activities, you'll find those posts on the Egeniq blog instead of here.

    Hi Ivo,

First of all a wonderful refreshing look you’ve got here. It truly has turned into a joyful place to be at. Unfortunately I won’t see much of it as I’m a subscriber to your feed.

Secondly I feel a bit sad that you stop blogging here and put all your money on the blog of your company. I would suggest to work the other way around since you already have invested a lot in creating a personal brand and it would mean you loose touch with your long-time listeners as your company’s blog takes over your outlet of information.

A suggestion on my part would be that you keep blogging here and have your company blog refer to the article published here (similar to what phpdeveloper.org does) so it gets the credits as well. You win both ways: a) your personal brand remains intact and b) you help build up the reputation of your company’s blog.

Again, this is just my point of view and I’m happy with whatever decision you make, but think about my comments here before you say farewell to what you’ve build up all this time.

    Just my € 0.02,

    Michelangelo

      Hey michelangelo,

thanks for the comments! I’m not saying that I won’t ever blog here again; but the site reflects something that was already the case: I blog less these days.
